Top 12 Luxury Hotels in Cabo San Lucas

August 22, 2021

The Polished Traveler team recently went on a scouting trip to Los Cabos in Baja Peninsula to check out the new, the renovated, and the existing luxury hotels. We are excited to share our top 12 picks. We typically aim to rate our favorite hotels, but in the case of Cabo, we found it challenging to do so and decided on a more informal list of the best hotels. Of course, we have our personal favorites but found that each of the luxury hotels in Cabo is perfect for a different set of clients, personalities, and needs. There truly is something for everyone in Cabo San Lucas. Read on to find your perfect Cabo match!

Los Cabos (as we learned on this trip) consists of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, Eastern Los Cabos and forms a perfect getaway for those looking for adventure, relaxation, culture, foodie experiences, and beach time. Long a favorite of stars and the hip and sophisticated crowd from the West Coast, Cabo keeps getting better with age. And now, thanks to the addition of nonstop flights from the East Coast (and we just heard Jetblue is adding even more nonstop options!), Cabo San Lucas is an easy-to-reach destination for most of us.

Our East Coast team took full advantage of these easy flights and spent glorious seven days exploring our old-time favorites: Rosewood Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection, One&Only Palmilla, Montage Los Cabos, Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection, and Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal; as well as the exciting newcomers – Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, Zádun, a Ritz Carlton Reserve, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos and 1 Hotel Homes. We stayed in four hotels (Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, Zádun, a Ritz Carlton Reserve, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedegral, and Montage Los Cabos) and toured the remaining eight on our list. We ate meals at all of the hotels and explored some of the local favorites in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, shopped in the adorable San Jose del Cabo, went on a fabulous boat ride to the famous Cabo arches, explored Mexico through a Mezcal tasting, indulged in some spa pampering, and even managed to sneak in an hour or two of beach/pool time. All in the name of research.

Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

I was very ambivalent about spending my first night in Cabo at the brand new Four Seasons hotel.  The hotel is an hour-long drive from the airport in the exact opposite direction from the remaining hotels we were checking out, thus taking away precious beach time on this intense trip. I also heard conflicting reviews from colleagues and was not sure whether going there before the area was fully developed made sense. Boy, was I glad I made the trip! The Four Seasons Los Cabos quickly became one of my personal favorites, and I was sad to be checking out after just one night. This is a hotel I will definitely be returning to for an extended stay!

It is hard to decide what I loved most about this resort – the spacious and well-appointed rooms featuring a perfectly curated mix of indigenous designed wall hangings, thick cotton throws, and beautiful woven baskets; the stunning desert-like landscape paying homage to Baja California; or the sprawling (and swimmable!) beach. Believe it or not, I actually overheard one guest complaining about how vast the beach was and how long it took him to get to the water!

Who is the Four Seasons Los Cabos best for? Four Seasons loyalists looking to check out the newest addition to the portfolio; families with kids looking for a swimmable beach and a full-service resort; avid golfers (the course is quite challenging, I hear) and anyone looking to plop down on the beach and relax.

Who the FS may be wrong for – Those looking to party or go out on the town (at least until the marina full of restaurants, bars, clubs, and shops is developed). The hotel’s remote location on the Eastern Cape does not allow for quick trips into town.

As a Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Polished Traveler clients will receive an upgrade upon arrival, daily breakfast for two, round-trip airport transfers (a $500 value!), one-time resort credit (based on room category booked); early check-in, late check-out and complimentary wifi.

Zádun, a Ritz Carlton Reserve

Before landing in Cabo, I was most excited about experiencing the brand new Zádun, a Ritz Carlton Reserve hotel. I have sent numerous clients there, and they all loved it. I was obsessed with the stunning design, and, as I am all about private pools (which all of the accommodations at Zadun have), I was looking forward to a dip in my own plunge pool. I am also a massive fan of the Reserve Portfolio of the Ritz Carlton and was super excited to experience the newest (and only the fourth) addition to the portfolio. I spent two glorious nights at Zádun, and the resort did not disappoint, making it one of my personal favorite hotels in Cabo (and in the world).

As with all RC Reserve hotels, Zádun is not just another Ritz Carlton. It is an oasis of serenity, design, and barefoot luxury located in an untouched sanctum where desert and sea collide. All of the rooms (even entry-level categories) have their own plunge pools and offer panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez; each guest is assigned their own butler called “tosoani” who stays in touch via WhatsApp; and the Alkemia Spa, with its own plunge pool, landscaped spa pool offering water therapy, steam room, and sauna is just divine.

Who is Zádun for? At first glance, the resort may seem to cater mainly to couples on a romantic getaway. And while it is true that Zadun’s design is perfect for those looking for a romantic getaway, the hotel is also an excellent choice for families. The Jean-Michel Cousteau branded kids club is one of the best in the area and offers a ton of fun and vibrant activities for kids of all ages (and adults looking to learn about the natural habitats in Baja California). And for that extra wow factor for kids – ask for a teepee in the room – guaranteed to make the little ones extra happy.

Who is Zadun not for – it is hard to find anyone that Zadun would not be perfect for as it has so much to offer. However, if you are looking for a swimmable beach or a place with a pool party scene, this one is not for you.

Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, private butler service, complimentary breakfast for two daily, $150 resort credit, early check-in/late check-out, based on availability, complimentary one-way private airport transfers (round-trip for family rooms, suites & villas), and complimentary parking.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

We spent the next two nights at the majestic Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal and loved every minute of it. Located in the town of Cabo San Lucas, this resort is perfect for those looking for quick access to the bar and nightlife Cabo is so famous for. Our stay at Waldorf Astoria was off to a great start when we were surprised by the unique grand entrance (which we will not spoil for those of you who have not been yet) that ended with stunning ocean views. And despite the fact the resort is built into the rocky cliffside of Pedregal, it offers its guests a beautiful sandy beach perfect for romantic walks and nature spotting (while we missed whale watching season by a couple of weeks, we spotted sea lions, flying manta rays and dolphins from our private terrace). Please note that the beach here is not swimmable. The hotel more than makes up for this with a ton of beautiful swimming pools, including a zero entry family pool and as well as adult-only pools for those looking to get away from the little ones.

I was most blown away by the high level and personalization of service. At a time when many luxury hotels are struggling with providing the same level of service we all got accustomed to, Pedregal shined like a bright star. We were assigned a personal butler on arrival who seemed to be available for any whim at any time of day or night. Did I mention the daily bucket of coronitas and freshly-made chips and guacamole delivered to our suite every afternoon?

Who is the Waldorf Astoria Pedregal for? Anyone looking for a traditional Mexican vibe with stellar service; those looking for action and entertainment (both in town and at the hotel); guests looking for a romantic getaway (thanks to the hotel’s adult-only side) and multigenerational travelers looking for multi-bedroom villas and breathtaking views.

Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, private butler service, complimentary breakfast for two daily, $150 resort credit, early check-in/late check-out, based on availability, Complimentary VIP airport Lounge Tickets with all Beach Front Suite Bookings; complimentary parking and wifi.

Montage Los Cabos

We spent our last night in Cabo  at the sexy Montage Los Cabos. While no longer the new kid on the block, Montage Los Cabos is still one of my personal favorite hotels in Cabo San Lucas, and it was so good to revisit it after my first stay when it first opened. I fell in love with it then and was happy to see that Montage Los Cabos is still as great (if not better!) as it first opened. Unlike most of its competitors, the hotel limits its Mexican touches to a few subtle reminders like framed photos of the region, a colorful pillow here and there, and some cacti. Otherwise, the contemporary California-cool guest rooms have a color palette of primarily tans, whites, and creams that blend perfectly into the surrounding desert landscape. My favorite part of the rooms were the spacious bathrooms and, more importantly – the outdoor showers. Who does not love a good outdoor shower on a beach vacation!

Located between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Montage Los Cabos is the perfect jumping-off point to explore both towns. Do not feel like leaving the hotel? No problem at all – there is plenty to enjoy at the hotel. Montage Los Cabos boasts one of the few swimmable beaches in Los Cabos. It sits on Santa Maria Bay in a protected cove, making plopping on the beach and swimming a favorite activity for many guests. And for those looking for a bit more action – there are always complimentary paddle boards and kayaks for guests to use. We also loved the ping pong and volleyball courts right on the beach.

Who is the Montage Los Cabos perfect for? Pretty much everyone. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, traveling with the whole family, or a group of friends, Montage Los Cabos is the hotel for you. Families with kids will love the children’s program, Paintbox, for children ages 5-12 years old, and the Merits program, which works like a scavenger hunt offering ideas/activities for families throughout their stay. Multigenerational families or larger groups will love the availability of interconnecting rooms as well as some fabulous multi-bedroom residences. And couples and singles alike will love the fun and convivial atmosphere at the pools and bars.

But Not So Perfect For: Those seeking seclusion. Montage Los Cabos has a California sophisticated chic vibe with the fun-loving guests to match. And the swim-up bar and the infinity pool overlooking the beach and the bay are the life of the party in the afternoons.

Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, Daily $70 USD breakfast credit per bedroom, $100 resort credit, early check-in/late check-out, based on availability, complimentary wifi, and complimentary one-way airport transfers for bookings in Specialty Suites.

Rosewood Las Ventanas Al Paraiso

Las Ventanas al Paraiso takes the prize for the best welcome of all the hotels we visited. The minute you arrive at this magical property, you are not only welcomed by the sweeping views of the sea but also by a merry mariachi band and a tasty margarita. What a way to start your Mexican vacation! While we did not stay at las Ventanas, we toured the grounds, checked out the rooms, the spa, gym, and the pools, and dined at Sea Grill, which offers picture-perfect sea views and an array of seafood dishes including fish tacos, ceviches, and amazing tuna tartar taquitos.

During our tour, we were blown away by the stunning accommodations and the attention to detail in the décor. In keeping with the Rosewood Hotels’ “Sense of Place” philosophy, Las Ventanas al Paraiso evokes the true essence of the Baja Mexico region. The spacious rooms and suites come with handcrafted details, hand-inlaid pebble headboards, and stone and in-laid pebble work floors. And while las Ventanas is my go-to resort for couples, honeymooners, and anyone looking for a romantic escape, the hotel also caters to families with their 2- and 3- bedroom villas.

If you are worried Las Ventanas may be too mellow with all of the honeymooners; do not fret. The resort recently opened La Botica, a 1920’s style prohibition-style speakeasy with live music and an impressive cocktail list put together by the hotel’s team of excellent mixologists. La Botica is a fun and intimate bar and should not be missed during your stay.

As a Rosewood Elite member, Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, Complimentary upgrade to an Oceanview Rooftop Terrace Junior Suite from an Oceanview Junior Suite for stays between March 31 and December 19 upon booking (based on availability); Daily Full American breakfast for up to two people per bedroom available via in-room dining or in the restaurant; An Oasis Experience inclusive of a Margarita & Taco Sampler from Taqueria (for up to two guests, per stay); USD125 resort credit per stay; and 3 PM late check-out for stays between March 31 and December 19 (based on availability).

One&Only Palmilla

One&Only Palmilla is the original luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas – originally built in 1956 as a vacation getaway for the son of the Mexican president. When Palmilla’s 15-room hotel opened to guests, it was accessible only by boat or plane, making it a very exclusive getaway for the rich and famous. Today, under the ownership of One&Only, the 200-room resort is still a chic hideaway, albeit one easier to get to, and still a favorite of celebrities and the well-to-do. We loved exploring the original whitewashed chapel (yes, the hotel has its own church, making it a perfect choice for a destination wedding), fountain, and the historic first hotel building. But our favorite aspect of the hotel are the beautiful grounds of One & Only Palmilla – lush, exotic and perfectly manicured, and decorated, creating a stunning tropical yet modern oasis.

Who is it for? Everyone! The many accommodation options, including some fantastic villas, make it a perfect choice for families and groups. The Agua family pool is enormous and offers zero-entry on one side, making it ideal for families with little ones. But the hotel is also a fantastic option for couples and adult getaways who can spend time away from kids in the stunning Vista adult pool, offering amazing views and a swim-up bar.

Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, Daily Continental breakfast for two guests per bedroom; $150 USD equivalent Resort/Hotel credit to be utilized during the stay; Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability; and complimentary wi-fi.

Viceroy Los Cabos

Designed by the famous architect Miguel Angel Aragonés, Viceroy Los Cabos takes the prize for best in design and stands out among the more traditionally designed hotels in the area. The unapologetically futuristic resort is built using concrete and glass, and its minimalistic décor stuns from the minute you enter. It is all clean lines and boxy angles except for the nest-like structure that houses the famous restaurant Lido and the curve of the pools. Thanks to the brilliant use of shallow pools and narrow pathways, the resort looks as if it were floating. Viceroy Los Cabos spices things up in the evenings with a colorful display of lights on the walls adding liveliness and sexiness. The all-white rooms and villas feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies, and all offer ocean views. And while the beach is not swimmable, it is stunning, perfectly manicured, and complemented by two infinity pools.

Tip – Lido Restaurant in the nest is an absolute must even if not staying at the hotels.

Who is Viceroy Los Cabos for? Beachfront villas and the kids club and on-property cinema make it a good choice for families. However, the resort’s sexy design and the see-and-be-seen vibe make it THE resort for those looking for a fashionable getaway with easy access to nightlife, bars, and restaurants.

As part of the Viceroy Guild Program, Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, Daily Continental breakfast for two guests per bedroom; $100 USD equivalent hotel credit to be utilized during the stay; Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability; and complimentary wi-fi.

Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection

When you enter resort proper, the first thing you see is the mind-blowing three-level infinity pool that leads you directly to the beach. The first level is for kids, the second level is for families, and the third level is adults-only, offering something for everyone. The beach directly in front of the pools and the two restaurants is scenic but not swimmable. However, Chileno Bay does offer access to one of the most extensive swimmable beaches in Cabo. As with all beaches in Mexico, the swimmable beach is public, but the hotel has its own set up with loungers, umbrellas, and beach service. When we were at the hotel, the pool area was hoppin’, and it was by far the liveliest hotel scene we encountered on our scouting trip.

All of the rooms feature private terraces with views of the ocean, garden, or pool. My favorite aspect of the rooms was the most beautiful bathrooms I have experienced in Cabo. They were supremely spacious and sported the most beautiful tile design work that felt Mexican, modern and stylish all at the same time. I developed severe bathroom envy after my visit.

Who is Chileno Bay for? The hotel is very family-friendly and offers a ton of kids’ programs, and even has a cinema. And the 2 – 4-bedroom villas are perfect for large families. However, I found the resort ideal for those looking for a fun and lively vibe during their stay.

Those looking for some peace and quiet will probably be better off at Chileno Bay’s sister property, Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection.

Polished Traveler clients will receive exclusive rates, an upgrade upon arrival, if available, Daily Continental breakfast for two guests per bedroom; $100 USD equivalent hotel credit to be utilized during the stay; Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability; and complimentary wi-fi.

Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection

We fell in love with Esperanza the minute we pulled up into the small courtyard and glimpsed the stunning ocean views. Perched on a jagged cliff above the Sea of Cortez, Esperanza offers fantastic views pretty much from any spot on the hotel grounds and all of the hotel’s 59 casita-style guest rooms and 96 villas. And when I saw the adult pool, an infinity pool seemingly spilling over into the Sea of Cortez, I was sold. Esperanza is breathtaking, and the natural color palette of the resort – pale blue, deep inky blues, warm beige, and shades of white is naturally soothing and relaxing.

Esperanza offers 6 places to dine, including a swim-up cantina. We had one of our best lunches in Cabo at the Cocina del Mar, where not only was the food excellent but the ambiance (the restaurant is perched on a rocky promontory and surrounded by crashing waves) but the views were jaw-dropping.

Who is Esperanza for? If you are looking for fantastic food, relaxation, an incredible spa, and a chilled-out vibe, Esperanza is the perfect resort for you. I also love it for romantic getaways and honeymooners. Families are welcome but the resort is uniquely suited couples.

NOBU Los Cabos

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and producer Meier Teper’s latest (and first in Latin America) hotel opening, Nobu Los Cabos, lays on the other side of the Cabo San Lucas town, a largely undeveloped part of the area. A location perfect for ogling the insanely stunning sunsets Cabo offers. Nobu Los Cabos wowed us from the minute we entered through the minimalistic zen garden that leads us to the lobby and endless ocean views.

The hotel is unapologetically Nobu-like. Think clean, modern lines, minimalistic décor with a mixture of neutral and warm wood tones giving us a decidedly Japanese feel with a few well-chosen Mexican accents (artwork by Mexican artists, clever landscaping, and fire elements can be seen throughout the property). You will also struggle to find authentic Mexican food here – the hotel has three restaurants – the famous Nobu Los Cabos, Malibu Farms, and an Argentinian steakhouse (all excellent). The spacious, Japanese-inspired rooms are luxurious and very comfortable. For extra privacy – choose a room with a private plunge pool, and you will feel like you are in your own peaceful pod.

In contrast to the zen design is the Cortez Pool – party central of the hotel. This is where you go to see and be seen, flaunt your hard-earned abs, listen to the never-ending beat of the music, and drink endless champagne.

Who is Nobu Los Cabos for?  With its myriad of swimming pools (including an adult-only pool) and a kids club, Nobu Ls Cabos welcomes everyone – families, singles, couples, girlfriend getaways, and avid golfers. And while I saw several families during my afternoon at the resort, I think Nobu Los Cabos is the perfect choice for those looking for a party atmosphere. Remember, Nobu Los Cabos is a vibe, not a hotel.

1 Homes Cabo

1 Hotel Homes in Cabo opening went largely unnoticed due to the ongoing pandemic, but it is worth considering and checking into. The 1 Hotel brand is one of my favorite hotel groups. It is luxurious but also driven by its mission of conscious design and sustainable architecture, which I find increasingly important nowadays. The hotels are designed to bring natural light, sound, and texture inside, making the spaces feel comfortable and homey.

1 Homes Cabo do not disappoint. Located smack in the middle of Cabo San Lucas, the homes are within walking distance to the marina, shopping, and local restaurants. The unique location not only offers direct views of the Sea of Cortez and the famous Cabo arch but, more importantly, it gives access to one of the few swimmable beaches in the area. And the 2-4 bedroom residences and villas are spacious, well-designed, bright, and airy and all come with their own plunge pool, making this a perfect hotel for anyone.

Who is 1 Homes Cabo for? Anyone looking for modern design, swimmable beach, and private plunge pool. While the multi-bedroom residences are perfect for families, the resort does not currently have a kids club.

Traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico during COVID

Mexico does not require any testing prior to entering the country. And while that may deter some of us from heading there, I was nicely surprised by the attention to mask wearing and social distancing while both at the hotels and in towns and felt safer than in many other destinations.

The hotels also make it extremely easy and affordable to obtain a COVID test prior to returning home as required by each country of origin.
